Lancaster University aims to apply ideas, knowledge, technologies, skills to benefit society by pursuing research at the highest international level. Their expertise encompasses sustainable intensification, integrating their knowledge of soil, water and plants and combining it with agro-ecology, environmental chemistry and bio-pesticides to help intensify production agriculture, while minimising its environmental impact and increasing availability of food.

Researchers at Lancaster also study the sociology of food production, distribution and consumption. The university’s food security group exploit social science research and related methodologies to understand the political economy of food security in civil society, SMEs and the alternative agro-food sector.
